Applicants are required to attend an entrance audition which takes place at the end of March / beginning of April each year.

Exact dates for auditions as applicable to the forthcoming new academic year will be listed in our academic calendar a few months prior to the event. Dates, though unlikely, are subject to change. We recommend you consult our academic calendar.

The entrance audition serves to evaluate the basic musical talent of the applicant and is the primary factor in determining an applicant’s acceptance into the YPM Music School.

An applicant’s audition consists of 2 parts

• Interview
• Test

Following areas will be tested

• The ability to differentiate between high and low sounds
• The ability to recognize the number of notes played simultaneously (1, 2 or 3 notes)
• The ability to repeat (clapping) short rhythmic patterns
• The ability to repeat (sing) short melodies, 1 to 2 measures in length
• Sight-Reading abilities (applies only to students with prior instrumental experience and is not a deciding factor for determining a student’s acceptance into the YPM Music School)

While applicants auditioning for Pre-Elementary / Elementary grades can be accepted into the YPM Music School without having any prior musical / instrumental experience, applicants wishing for acceptance into higher grades are required to demonstrate their instrumental abilities by performing 1 or more pieces as part of their audition. The applicant may read from the score or perform from memory.

Performance requirements

* In addition, applicants auditioning for grade 5 or above are required to participate in a written theory test which will be held on the same day as their audition.

Applicants who have successfully passed the audition are individually evaluated to determine their appropriate grade of entry into the YPM Music School. Audition results, age as well as the level of musical / instrumental experience are being considered in our attempt to facilitate an optimal learning experience.

Placement will be re-evaluated at the end of a student’s first 3 months of learning and may be adjusted at the sole discretion of the student’s major teacher.

Audition results will be sent by Email to each applicant and should be received within 1 week following the audition. Additionally, we will post the audition results at both our school locations as well on online approximately 1 week after audition has taken place.
